Monthly Roundup – March 2017

Now a regular feature, here’s the round-up of recommendations so everything is in one place, and so we have a nice record of speculations updated for February 2017…

OK, so I dropped the ball in January with this one, and February is late. I’m sorry! To be fair, with all the CES kerfuffle it was worth skipping one anyway, and now we’ve had to rethink what’s on the way and when.

In alphabetical order of manufacturer.

Manufacturer Device Current Speculation
Garmin Fenix Don’t buy – this is very old
Garmin Fenix 2 Don’t buy – Fenix 3 is now cheap and Fenix 4 is due imminently
Garmin Fenix 3 Fenix 3 HR, Quatix 3, D2 Bravo, Tactix Bravo This has finally been superceded. Don’t panic though, the Fenix 5 adds very little, so if the Fenix 3 is cheap it’s a great watch to buy. Updates will stop within the next year though probably, but there isn’t a lot they need to add to this stable and mature watch.
Garmin Fenix 5 Brand new, although pricey. This looks to be an updated Fenix 3 firmware so the usual “don’t buy Garmin until 6 months in” shouldn’t apply in theory, as most of the code is already tried and tested.
Garmin Fenix Chronos Brand New, buy if you wear solid gold underpants. This has been replaced by a Fenix 5 so it’s not without risk, especially given the cost. Garmin have confused the market here and nobody knows the future of the Chronos. In theory it’s a 5 underneath so safe, but I wouldn’t put my money on it at that price.
Garmin Forerunner 910XT Don’t buy – this is very old
Garmin Forerunner 920XT Replacement imminent but this is a very capable and mature device
Garmin Forerunner 930XT/935XT Imminent. Yes, still imminent despite CES coming and going!
Garmin Forerunner 25 This has been out a while but nothing obvious seems planned in the near future. August 2017 would be the soonest we’d expect a replacement.

Garmin Forerunner 210 Don’t buy, this is very old (2010)
Garmin Forerunner 220 Don’t buy, this is very old (2013)
Garmin Forerunner 230 Buy – this is still fairly new. October 2017 is the soonest we’d expect replacement
Garmin Forerunner 225 Don’t buy. Garmin immediately replaced this with the 235 using their own sensor.

Garmin Forerunner 630 Buy – this is still fairly new. October 2017 is the soonest we’d expect replacement
Garmin Forerunner 735XT Buy – this is brand new and seems to be running Fenix code so hopefully isn’t buggy. May 2018 is the earliest we’d expect replacement.
Garmin Epix Don’t buy. This experimental watch led to the Fenix 5X but firmware updates have all but stopped on this device despite numerous bugs
Garmin Epix 2 Abandoned, the Epix has been replaced by Fenix 5X
Garmin Vivoactive Already replaced by the Vivoactive HR. Still a very good device if you find it cheap, this Jan 2015 watch is still modern and capable
Garmin Vivoactive HR Buy, this is still quite new. February 2018 is the soonest we’d expect a replacement
Garmin Edge 20 Buy, this is current, although may be replaced around June 2017. Given that we’re still waiting on the Edge 1010 the Edge30 is more likely to be 2018

Garmin Edge 820 Buy, just released. July 2018 is the earliest we’d expect replacement although 2019 more likely
Garmin Edge 1000 Buy if you get a good deal, this is overdue for replacement and very, very old for a current device (2014!). Expect the replacement sometime this summer

I recently discovered your website and I have to say I like your monthly roundups. I am in the process of selling my Fenix 3 to get a forerunner 235 or the latest forerunner. So you think the forerunner 935 won’t be out until October? I was hoping it would be out by the summer.

Garmin Forerunner 230 is no longer listed on the Garmin website, only the 235. Discontinued?

Weird. No not discontinued but hard to find that’s for sure! If you search it’s still for sale though even from Garmin. Bizarre not to list your own product though!

      • Traxzero says:

It’s moved under previous models, so they will propaply sell it until stock last and then move it to discontinued.
I know that 630 Midnight Blue is discontinued allready.

First thanks for putting together the round up. I was excited when I saw refurb Epix watches for $185 thinking this would just be clunkier version of the Fenix 3 but your recommend staying away because of lack of updates. But the Epix last got an update 2/2/17 while the fenix 3’s last one was 12/19/16. Granted the Fenix is at version 8 while the Epix is still 3. Is there any hope or am I grasping at straws.

Have a read of the Garmin forums. Epix got one very late update while Fenix had hundreds of updates. Fenix firmware paused while the Fenix 5 was released, hence no recent updates but it’s definitely the better watch. If you get a cheap Epix it does still work just don’t expect bug fixes and new features. As far as Garmin are concerned it’s a dead duck. As I said, it does still work though and the forum lists current bugs so if you’re good with those it’s probably a bargain. This site is aimed at stopping surprises rather than making recommendations and there are no surprises coming for the Epix line, if it’s cheap it could be a good bargain. The only alternative with mapping is Fenix 5x at over £700!
